Local brands took centre-stage at the night market organised by the Sunday Social Market at Open Farm Community last Saturday, 30th November.

SINGAPORE - The night market, named Weird Wonderful Pasar Malam, was filled to the brim with booths from local brands such as The Clean Attempt, Common Capsule, and Seedlip Drinks. (28 words)
Inspired by Tiong Bahru Bakery’s picnic event, Weird Wonderful World, Sunday Social made use of the same “weird, wonderful” elements to organise a night of music, food, and activities while also showcasing local brands.
In an interview with City Nomads, Jade Amar, the curator at Sunday Social, talks about how difficult it is managing a small company in Singapore.
“It’s not a secret that Singapore is a very expensive place to rent a store and it’s a lot easier for big brands to survive,” said Amar.
Aside from selecting vendors for Sunday Social’s events, Amar is also the brand manager of Lilla Lane and recognises the struggles faced by brands operating locally. As the one in charge of selecting vendors, Amar specifically seeks out local brands to set up booths at their events. One of those brands was The Clean Attempt.
“It’s difficult to gain the attention of local consumers. They just buy whatever is convenient, whatever is shown in the media,” said Mr. Steve Tan, a manager at The Clean Attempt.
Local brands in Singapore often struggle with garnering a large enough consumer base. Events like these give them the opportunity to reach a larger audience while also networking with other local brand owners like themselves.
“I didn’t know the booths set up here were from local brands but when I found out, I was more inclined to buy something to show my support,” said Ms. Sarah Hana, 33.
Hana says she prefers buying from local brands as she believes they have a lot of potential for growth and would like to help them out. As someone who also happens to really enjoy markets and fiestas, she felt that this event was perfect for her.
“The idea [behind Sunday Social Market] was to create a space where people can hang out with their friends, listen to good music, eat delicious food and discover local brands and talented crafters,” said Sunday Social in a statement on their Facebook page.
Through the events they host, Sunday Social hopes to continue providing opportunities for local brands to grow. Their next project, a collaboration with Camp Kilo Charcoal Club, is set to take place in January of next year.
